SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly’s 2015-16 wrestling schedule, announced Monday by director of athletics Don Oberhelman and head wrestling coach Brendan Buckley, features seven home dual meets and a trio of tournaments.
For the third straight year, Cal Poly will host a dual meet outdoors in the University Union plaza, hosting Stanford on Monday, Nov. 2. The dual with the Cardinal will be one of four Pac-12 dual meets the Mustangs will host this season.
Cal Poly also will host Oregon State on Feb. 5, Arizona State on Feb. 13 and Boise State on Feb. 14.
The Mustangs’ home slate also will include Drexel on Nov. 14, Duke on Jan. 17 and Grand Canyon on Jan. 30.
On Dec. 4-5, Cal Poly returns to the Las Vegas Invitational after a one-year absence. The Mustangs also will compete in the Roadrunner Open in Fresno on Nov. 15 and the Southern Scuffle on Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Buckley’s squad enters the upcoming campaign having lost just one senior — two-time national qualifier and 2012 Pac-12 champion Dominic Kastl.
“With the loss of only one senior from last year’s squad, we’re expecting a strong performance from our team in 2015-16,” said Buckley. “Our schedule includes five Pac-12 duals in a conference that is rapidly becoming more competitive.
“We will see two new teams this season as we host Duke and Drexel at home while competing against Old Dominion in nearby Gilroy,” Buckley added. “On the tournament front, we return to the Las Vegas Invitational and will head east to the Southern Scuffle for two of the nation’s premiere tournaments.
“The goal is to expose our team to the nation’s best wrestlers and present them with the opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Championships and ultimately land on the All-American podium,” Buckley said. “Lastly, we will feature another exciting outdoor dual at Cal Poly when we host Stanford in November.”
Dual meets on the road for the Mustangs include San Francisco State in November and CSU Bakersfield, Northern Colorado and Wyoming in January. The San Francisco State dual will be held outdoors on Nov. 7.
Cal Poly will hold its Green vs. Gold intrasquad dual on Sunday, Oct. 25.
